The History

Harrison, New Jersey, was incorporated as a township in 1867 and later became a town in 1900. Located along the Passaic River across from Newark, Harrison developed rapidly during the late 19th and early 20th centuries as an industrial hub. Factories producing textiles, chemicals, and machinery attracted waves of immigrant workers, particularly from Ireland, Italy, and Eastern Europe. Because of its industrial roots and hardworking community, Harrison earned the nickname “The Beehive of Industry.” In recent decades, the town has undergone significant redevelopment, transitioning from heavy industry to a more residential and mixed-use community.
