The History

Kearny, New Jersey, is a township in Hudson County that was established in 1867 when residents of the northern part of Harrison Township sought independence. The town was named in honor of Major General Philip Kearny, a Civil War hero and local landowner. Early government meetings and civic life began shortly after its formation, and over the years Kearny grew as an industrial and residential community with deep immigrant roots. The town also has preserved historic buildings like the Highland Hose No. 4 firehouse, built in 1894 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
